Falling Weight Deflectometer (FWD) Testing
Kamen Engineering own and operate two falling weight deflectometer test apparatus both having unique characteristics. Deflection testing within flexible pavements is completed in accordance with AUSTROADS AG:AM/T006 providing data that can be used to back calculate elastic layer modulus and empirically assess the pavements structural capacity through the profile. In-situ characteristics are used in rehabilitation design.

Kamen Engineering undertakes pavement surface frictions testing on runways, highways, freeway and urban roadways using the Griptester apparatus. We have a number of machines available to complete this service. We have completed friction surveys for many airports in all states of Australia. We also undertake pavement surface assessment for friction, serviceability and compliance.

We own and operate pavement investigation drill rigs. In house investigation services provides us with a critical analysis tool confirming the source and cause of any distress. Pavement distress typically is associated with excessive moisture, inadequate materials including poor combined aggregate grading, low strength material, inadequate compaction, insufficient pavement thickness, poor interfacial layer bonding and/or impenetrable buried bitumen layers. Without knowledge of the cause of the pavement distress, appropriate and suitable remedial design cannot be made .

Ivan Mihaljevic has over 28 years-experience in pavement engineering, specifically in structural assessment, asphalt, concrete, granular materials, bituminous spray seal applications and testing and investigation. Ivan has completed numerous forensic investigations of failed structures and materials including local urban, sporting, highway, container terminals and airport pavements. We have represented our findings in litigation proceedings. We are well placed to provide this service as independent Consultants.

Our experience and expertise in the design and manufacture of construction materials provides us with the knowledge to undertake comprehensive review of asphalt, concrete and granular materials. These services are undertaken for a number of state and local road agencies and also privately funded projects on airports, container handling yards and motor racing tracks. Material assessment includes structural, durability, volumetric and constitute raw material quality and suitability. We also complete independent testing of materials for verification purposes and undertake engineering audits and supervision of construction ensuring design philosophies and goals are achieved..
